A Preview Piece from “A Memoir: Life in Poetry”

a letter to my stars

i have journeyed;
through the calmest night of my life
in a place of serenity
crowded by patience and virtue
darkness cut by the light of the moon
night songs played by cicadas
fresh air chilling the heat on my skin

i have known
peace
acceptance
joy
love
and have named them after you

for you are stars to me
guiding lights above
that remind me of where home is

for you have been a resting place
a solace from the seas
a place of learning and laughter

before the map read
before the course plotted
before the sails unfurled
before the anchor raised

i will laugh and learn with you
now

the moon rests
the Son appears
the light shines
but behind the clouds
my stars twinkle on
